April 15th was not only Tax Day here in the USA, but Go Day for the EPA!
They announced $600 million in new funding through Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. What does this mean? Finally, some money to do something for the environment.
They will be putting this fund solely towards the cleanup of hazardous waste. This means faster cleanup and the creation of jobs.
It doesn’t hurt that it got some press too. The environment needs more of that. All we talk about these days is global warming and carbon credits and melting glaciers. It’ll be nice to see things get a little greener around the country for once. So much pollution and risks to our health…
On another note. I just read an article where some Republicans are bringing in shady religious “leaders” as expert witnesses in congressional environmental/energy committee meetings. The basic argument is that God wants the environment to be as it is and we need to stop trying to change the course of things. Please stop wasting our time and tax money with this crap. Just the facts, eh!

We’re celebrating Earth Day at the Oakland Zoo tomorrow – Sunday, April 19th. If you’re in the area, swing by. They have quite an amazing program on hand that’s free with regular admission.
We’ll be at the Playground Stylings booth selling our organic tees. We’ve added some additional youth sizes as well as tees for Dad too — only available the day of our event.
See you there!
I forgot to mention that I extended the Playground Stylings 20% discount through the end of Winter — that’s 3/21.
Get it while you can.

Big shout out to Judith Gorgone of Planetpals for the head’s up on this event. Text taken from WWF.
Turn out. Take action. Be part of this historic event. March 29, 2009, 8:30pm local time. World Wildlife Fund is asking us to turn off our lights for one hour — EARTH HOUR — to make a global statement about climate change and to demonstrate commitment to finding solutions.
Great site! And I love the kids’ section too.
Well done and count me in!

I have used Linkedin as a business tool for FlashBrigade for over a year. It’s a fabulous way to build community around my business profile… albeit, one that’s ever evolving!
Lately, I’ve joined an awful lot of Green groups through LinkedIn and am meeting a lot of interesting people ‘virtually’ and learning a good deal about what’s going on in the World when it comes to sustainability and eco-business. Check out some of the groups I belong to:
Bright Green, CleanTech, Climate Change – I care, Green, Greentech Media, GreenTek, Opportunity Green….
To all those members: Thanks for the information and education!

Just found out what the creators of Flash are up to these days and I’m hoping it will be a ‘killer’ technology that changes our lives.
Check out greenbox, a home energy management platform… based on the success of Flash and the smart factor of the founders of both technologies, it’s bound to find traction in the energy marketplace and become a ‘must have’ for us all.
Guess you can count me as a fan already… but then they had me at FutureSplash.

I have never been a fan of corn syrup. It’s bad for you and the propaganda from the agribusiness giants such as Archer Daniels Midland just makes me sicker. One of the most powerful groups in Washington DC is the corn lobby.. their latest raison d’etre is eschewing the benefits of ethanol.
In 2007, 75% of renewable tax benefits went to corn-based ethanol.. 75%! Crazy because criticisms are that it’s bad for the environment, takes more fuel to produce it than the fuel it creates and it increases pressure on the world’s food supplies. But read the link to the article. It gets even better… or should I say worse.
Now the corn industry is in the news again. Tests have discovered mercury in high-fructose corn syrup. The very corn syrup that is used in most processed foods as a sweetener. I try hard not to buy anything with corn syrup in it but it’s everywhere. And to think that mercury is now everywhere — toxic mercury. The article in The Washington Post discusses a study by a non-profit watchdog group that found nearly one in three of 55 brand name foods contained mercury. It might now be everywhere but frankly that number is shocking. But don’t let me sway you. Have a read for yourself and weigh in.
Don’t get me started on hydrogenated oils…

I really hoped I’d get the online store up and running this weekend. I took pics of all the shirts and uploaded them, tweaked some descriptive copy and then started finding little bugs that still need resolving. My web developer seems to have been offline so couldn’t get any help. Frustrating as had told myself and anyone who would listen that the store would be up and running in January. Guess it’s gonna be February after all… At least I changed the home page copy to reflect that.
